Some of the deadliest attacks and air disasters suffered by U.S. troops in Iraq since the war began in March 2003:

Dec. 1, 2005: Ten Marines on foot patrol are killed and 11 wounded by a roadside bomb near Fallujah.

Aug. 3, 2005: Marine amphibious assault vehicle strikes a roadside bomb near the Syrian border, killing 14 Marines.

June 23, 2005: Suicide car bomber slams into Marine convoy in Fallujah, killing six, including five Marines and a sailor.

June 16, 2005: Roadside bomb near Ramadi kills five Marines.

June 9, 2005: Roadside bomb kills five Marines during combat operations near the town of Haqlaniyah.

Jan. 26 2005: A Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashes during a sandstorm in western Iraq, killing 31 U.S. servicemen, including 30 Marines and one sailor.

Jan. 6, 2005: Roadside bomb kills seven soldiers in Baghdad.

Dec. 21, 2004: A suicide bomb explodes at a mess tent in a base near Mosul, killing 22 people including 14 soldiers and three American contractors.

Oct. 30, 2004: A suicide car bomber rams a U.S. convoy west of Baghdad, killing eight Marines and wounding nine.

Sept. 6, 2004: Suicide attacker detonates an explosives-packed vehicle next to military convoy outside Fallujah, killing seven Marines.

July 8, 2004 - Insurgents detonate a car bomb and fire mortars at military headquarters in Samarra, killing five U.S. soldiers, one Iraqi guardsman and three civilians and wounding 20 U.S. soldiers and four Iraqi guardsmen.

April 29, 2004: Eight soldiers clearing explosives from road killed by car bomb explosion in Mahmoudiyah.

Jan. 8, 2004: A Black Hawk medevac helicopter, possibly hit by a rocket, crashes near Fallujah, killing nine soldiers.

Nov. 15, 2003: Two Black Hawks crash in Mosul after colliding while trying to avoid ground fire, killing 17 soldiers and wounding five.

Nov. 7, 2003: A Black Hawk is downed near Tikrit, apparently by a rocket-propelled grenade, killing four crew members and two passengers from U.S. Army headquarters in Washington.

Nov. 2, 2003: A Chinook transport helicopter is shot down by shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile near Fallujah, killing 16 soldiers and wounding 26.

March 23, 2003: Eleven soldiers are killed when 507th Maintenance Company convoy is ambushed in Nasiriyah. Army Pvt. Jessica Lynch and six others are captured.
