at this point he realizes the heart of his broken dreams has been kept alive by a per diem lifestyle. believing that sooner or later one of the shiny hubcaps or perhaps the glorified certificates on the wall of life will really be the golden ticket out of middleness. at this point he realizes middleness isn't what there is for him but that he is in fact the very thing that middleness is. in the middle. either too late for the glorious days of leaded gasoline, dates without fear of the HIV and white picket fences with card tables of piss warm lemonade under the shade of a tree planted when he was born. always riding riding riding thinking this was it. born too soon to be young enough now that young is the thing to be. is it no longer noble to be old, no it is not. too young to understand what the lyrics in the song mean too young to understand the movies but old enough to talk about it. nothing else mattered then and worse than that, nothing else matters now. riding riding riding. at this point he realizes what he was looking for was gone as soon as he stopped looking. that the cattails he raced through while looking for the answer was the answer it self exploding from the stalk into the air like a big light bulb coming on and exploding at the same time. it was so bright he couldn't see it. now he sees the answers. but it's too late for the questions anymore. when the questions stopped getting asked the answers no longer matter. what is life's big secret isn't a secret at all. life's answer is the question that makes life. without the question what will does he have to find the answer. none he knows now, there is none. and as the waves break about the shiny hubcap rings of drops in the water of his memories he sees another answer that has a question not yet been asked. maybe, just maybe this isn't the middle he ponders. maybe this is the end of the begginning with the begginning of the middle about to start. another question being asked opens up the window of life and splashes clean the sand showing no footprints of unasked questions for answers not been found....
